How to split expenses on a group trip without the headache
A trip with friends is one of life's great pleasures — and one of the easiest ways to end up in a muddle over money. Someone books the flights, someone else covers the Airbnb, a third person keeps paying for taxis… and by the end nobody's quite sure who owes who. Here's how to keep it simple and fair from start to finish.
1. Decide what's shared before you go
Have a quick chat before the trip about which costs go in the shared pot — usually big-ticket items like accommodation, transport, group meals and activities — and which stay personal, like souvenirs or that extra cocktail. Agreeing upfront avoids debates later.
2. Pick one place to track everything
The classic mistake is relying on memory and a messy group chat. Instead, keep every shared expense in one shared list that everyone can see in real time. That way there's a single source of truth, and nobody has to reconstruct the trip from receipts at the end.
3. Don't stress about who pays in the moment
It doesn't matter if one person pays for dinner and another grabs the taxi — as long as it's all logged. Whoever pays simply adds the expense, and the running balance takes care of the rest. This keeps things relaxed while you're actually travelling.
4. Handle different currencies
Travelling abroad? Make sure whatever you use supports the local currency, so a dinner in euros and a taxi in another currency don't turn settling up into a maths exam. VAKKA supports 30+ currencies, with each trip set to its own.
5. Settle up when you're back
Once you're home, let the app work out the simplest set of payments to make everyone even — ideally with the fewest transfers possible. A couple of taps and the trip is squared away. Check the FAQ if you have questions.
